Math Autobiography free essay sample
Math can be very tricky for some people, easily making it their least favorite subject. For me, its different. I have always loved math, even when it is challenging. For my essay, I will write about whether or not I consider myself good at math, my good and bad experiences in math, my future plans as an educator and what I hope to accomplish this semester during this course. When younger, usually math was the first homework I would work on. I guess the reason I do that is because I love math and because I think I am a pretty decent math student. I usually I know what to do. I especially like doing Algebra because it is filled with proportions and multiplication. Those are my favorite areas in math. I guess I started loving math when I was in elementary school. I was great, and some students in my class were really good too, so there was always a little competition. We will write a custom essay sample on Math Autobiography or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page We would always get multiplication sheets and I was always finishing them quickly, along with some of the other proficient math students. In a way, those kind of competitions were fantastic for me. I was motivated to do well on them. The students also pushed me to be great even if they didnt realize it. I would have to say the best teaching and learning techniques that worked for me is hands on activities and basically breaking things down step by step. The worst would have to be, when a teacher just hand you the problems and expect you to know what to do. Even though math is one of my best subjects, I still expect my teacher to actually teach me. In teaching mathematics, I would help my students make the connection between classroom learning and their life outside of school. I would provide them the tools they need to handle issues they will come across with numbers in daily life and also prepare them for higher learning in math. As someone who enjoys the logic of math, I strive to make my passion for it contagious so that my future students will not only understand math but also enjoy learning it. With that goal in mind, I would make my lessons engaging and allow my students to tap into their own interests by offering options on assignments as often as possible. With that being said, I feel that math is very important; we use it in our everyday lives and would be lost without any knowledge of it. Teachers need to help students to understand and not just do math. We need to remember that everyone learns differently and we need to encourage that. I feel that reflecting on my personal experiences with Math will help me be a better teacher than if I hadnt taken the time to see what things can go wrong when teaching math to my students.

How would you direct the first scene of Antigone Essays
How would you direct the first scene of Antigone Essays How would you direct the first scene of Antigone Essay How would you direct the first scene of Antigone Essay Essay Topic: Antigone How would you direct the opening scene of Antigone and what effect would you want to achieve for your audience? The set design would be very simple; I would have a cyclorama being backlit with light that slowly gets brighter in the background. This scene takes place Just as the sun is beginning to rise and I would want the audience to know this. Placed in the middle would be the altar, which is where Antigone and Ismene would centre themselves through the scene, I would do this because I would want it to show the audience their fear of being caught, I would want them almost to be hiding by it during their argument. I would dress all characters in black, this I would do because I want the audiences attention to be on the characters body movements and voice tone rather than be distracted by their clothing, though I would have Ismenes appearance to be tidy and neat, whilst Antigones would be more dishevelled and unkempt, this importance of this is that it sends out a message to the audience about their personality and they learn more about the character and it helps them understand why the characters act the way they do. The characters voices the noise level will never raise past a very loud whisper, though obviously loud enough for the udience, this effect would show to the audience that they fear being seen and caught and this fear is never far from their minds throughout the whole scene. I would want the pace of the scene to be fast, as this would give the audience a sense of urgency between the two. At the start on the scene, Antigone slips into the room followed by her sister. I would have Antigone walk on confidently and straight towards the altar in the middle of the stage, this would show to the audience that Antigone was quite confident in what she wanted to do, I would then have Ismene alk on much more cautiously and slowly, this would show to the audience that this character was much less confident and worried of being caught than Antigone. As Antigone talks, I would have her tone quite forceful and her body movement more energetic, this would show to the audience that she was passionate about what she was saying and that she meant every word. When Ismene talks, I would have her tone be more reluctant and her body movements would be much less energetic and more cautious, I would want the audience to see that Ismene was still in fear of being aught and she didnt feel the same passion that Antigone did about what she was saying. When Antigone says to Ismene that shell soon show what you are, worth your breeding, Ismene, or a coward I would have her say this louder and more aggressive, with her body movements much larger to indicate to the audience that she is almost threatening her sister with that statement and this will create tensions between the two of them, I would want Ismene to react to this by shrinking away from her, as if she was scared of her sister, this would reinforce the tension between the pair of them. As Antigone realises that Ismene will not help her bury their dead brother, I would alrect tnls cnaracte rs Doay movements to Decome more rlg10 towards ner sister with Antigone not facing Ismene as much now, this would show the audience that Antigones feeling toward her sister and more hostile now, and her voice would become much colder and harsher. I would direct Ismene body movements to become tenser too, this will show to the audience that the atmosphere is quite tense and the audience will feel that tension too. As Antigone says Dear god shout it from the rooftops, Ill hate you all the more for silence-tell the world! I would direct Antigones voice would have to be as loud as it could be whilst still being quiet as the threat of being caught was still hanging over them but this voice change will show the audience that the character is angry, I would also have the actor put emphasis on the word hate to show the audience that she really means what she is saying to Ismene. Ismene says to Antigone youre wrong from the start, youre off on a hopeless quest I would direct her to do in a pleading tone, this would tell the audience that Ismene was trying to persuade her not to go, and this would also tell the audience that Ismene does care about her sister and doesnt want anything bad to happen to her. I would direct Antigones body movements to be aggressive after this, pointing at Ismene often, with her tone becoming more passionate now, this would show to the audience that she is becoming more emotional about the matter and she feels very strongly about it, also her finger pointing would show to the audience that she is sending all her aggression and the focus to Ismene. Antigone exits the stage; I would direct her to stomp off in an aggressive manner, this would show the audience a childish side to Antigone. I would direct Ismenes reaction to this as exasperated, this would affect the audience by showing them that she is tired of arguing with Antigone and when she speaks to where her sister went as is she was still there, the importance of this line is that is tells the audience that she does care for Antigone, so I would direct the actor to emphasise the words with her body language, to show the audience that she really means it. Ismene leaves towards the palace, I would have her run off the stage whilst looking scared, because at this moment the sounds of the chorus are becoming louder as such, closer to where Ismene is.

Characteristics of a Real Number
Characteristics of a Real Number What is a number? Well that depends. There are a variety of different kinds of numbers, each with their own particular properties. One sort of number, upon which statistics, probability, and much of mathematics is based upon, is called a real number. To learn what a real number is, we will first take a brief tour of other kinds of numbers. Types of Numbers We first learn about numbers in order to count. We began with matching the numbers 1, 2, and 3 with our fingers.Ã Then we and kept going as high as we could, which probably wasnt that high. These counting numbers or natural numbers were the only numbers that we knew about. Later, when dealing with subtraction, negative whole numbers were introduced. The set of positive and negative whole numbers is called the set of integers. Shortly after this, rational numbers, also called fractions were considered. Since every integer can be written as a fraction with 1 in the denominator, we say that the integers form a subset of the rational numbers. The ancient Greeks realized that not all numbers can be formed as a fraction. For example, the square root of 2 cannot be expressed as a fraction. These kinds of numbers are called irrational numbers. Irrational numbers abound, and somewhat surprisingly in a certain sense there are more irrational numbers than rational numbers. Other irrational numbers include pi and e. Decimal Expansions Every real number can be written as a decimal. Different kinds of real numbers have different kinds of decimal expansions. The decimal expansion of a rational number is terminating, such as 2, 3.25, or 1.2342, or repeating, such as .33333. . . Or .123123123. . . In contrast to this, the decimal expansion of an irrational number is nonterminating and nonrepeating. We can see this in the decimal expansion of pi. There is a never ending string of digits for pi, and whats more, there is no string of digits that indefinitely repeats itself. Visualization of Real Numbers The real numbers can be visualized by associating each one of them to one of the infinite number of points along a straight line. The real numbers have an order, meaning that for any two distinct real numbers we can say that one is greater than the other. By convention, moving to the left along on the real number line corresponds to lesser and lesser numbers. Moving to the right along the real number line corresponds to greater and greater numbers. Basic Properties of the Real Numbers The real numbers behave like other numbers that we are used to dealing with. We can add, subtract, multiply and divide them (as long as we dont divide by zero). The order of addition and multiplication is unimportant, as there is a commutative property. A distributive property tells us how multiplication and addition interact with one another. As mentioned before, the real numbers possess an order. Given any two real numbers x and y, we know that one and only one of the following is true: x y, x y or x y. Another Property - Completeness The property that sets the real numbers apart from other sets of numbers, like the rationals, is a property known as completeness. Completeness is a bit technical to explain, but the intuitive notion is that the set of rational numbers has gaps in it. The set of real numbers does not have any gaps, because it is complete. As an illustration, we will look at the sequence of rational numbers 3, 3.1, 3.14, 3.141, 3.1415, . . . Each term of this sequence is an approximation to pi, obtained by truncating the decimal expansion for pi. The terms of this sequence get closer and closer to pi. However, as we have mentioned, pi is not a rational number. We need to use irrational numbers to plug in the holes of the number line that occur by only considering the rational numbers. How Many Real Numbers? It should be no surprise that there are an infinite number of real numbers. This can be seen fairly easily when we consider that whole numbers form a subset of the real numbers. We could also see this by realizing that the number line has an infinite number of points. What is surprising is that the infinity used to count the real numbers is of a different kind than the infinity used to count the whole numbers. Whole numbers, integers and rationals are countably infinite. The set of real numbers is uncountably infinite. Why Call Them Real? Real numbers get their name to set them apart from an even further generalization to the concept of number. The imaginary number i is defined to be the square root of negative one. Any real number multiplied by i is also known as an imaginary number. Imaginary numbers definitely stretch our conception of number, as they are not at all what we thought about when we first learned to count.

Essay Writing Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Writing - Essay Example Before delving deep into the governance and economic systems of CBRM, is it important that we consider the problems faced by the province in recent years. It had once grown into an industrial slump, hit by depression and uncertainty. CBRM was perhaps was affected more than any other province in Canada. This gave rise to poor financial condition, poverty and unemployment. Thus, formulating the fiscal and economic policies has become a challenge for CBRM in present times. This paper aims at examining the governing system of CBRM, it fiscal and economic sustainability and policies for the same. This paper throws a good amount of light on the practices, policies undertaken and their outcomes. CBRM holds an important position when it comes to local administration (Impressions of Cape Breton, 1986, p 263). The crisis of DOSDO during 1966- 1967, has shaped up the political map of CBRM. Since then local political sensibility has controlled CBRMââ¬â¢s development, though political strategies implemented by the new government has succeeded in lessening political fragmentation within the province (Gagnon and Keating, 2012, p 110-111). In spite of following the policy of no amalgamation with other municipalities within the province of Nova Scotia, all the municipal corporations cooperate with each other. Generally municipalities which share any similar characteristics cooperate with each other. Thus there exists a relation based on cooperation among CBRM and another municipality HRM. The revenue that is earned is divided among the amalgamated provinces. Therefore, conflicts often occur over fair distribution of provincial revenues. Also, political lobbying also has its say wh en it comes of attention from Canadian government and share of resources (Sancton and Andrew, 2009, p 168). The amalgamation took place as a measure to reduce the annual expenditure. It was

Leadership and Management in Healthcare Research Paper
Leadership and Management in Healthcare - Research Paper Example Multidisciplinary approach is certainly beneficial but it is relatively complex and poses advance level challenges to leadership and management in delivering the goods for which it is formulated. Thereby, managing a healthcare organization in a multidiscipline and multicultural environment would demand a superior level of leadership and management characteristics that can meet the expectations of an increasingly aware society. Thesis This research paper will investigate various traits and characteristics that are considered indispensible to achieve organizational effectiveness and efficiency in a multidiscipline and multicultural healthcare organization. The paper will discuss leadership and management issues, approaches, traits and solutions from the perspective of a healthcare administrator to manage health and human services. The research will initially present some leadership and management issues that a healthcare administration may face. The paper will also discuss different ap proaches to settle these issues in healthcare management and personal traits in terms of leadership and management to analyze various approaches for respective pros and cons. The paper will then draw conclusions that can be useful for leadership and management of a multicultural and multidiscipline healthcare organization. Literature Review Demographic changes are a known phenomenon and diversity stems from it. The healthcare administrators have to be vigilant on ever increasing number of non-native healthcare professionals in their organizations because if diversity is a necessity the maintenance of healthcare tradition and enhancing the facility is an ultimate objective for healthcare administrators. Baxter (2000, p. 9) states this fact as, ââ¬Å"The primary selling point of... The paper ââ¬Å"Leadership and Management in Healthcareâ⬠analyses the issues that can be useful for leadership and management of a multicultural and multidiscipline healthcare organization. The healthcare administrators have to be vigilant on ever increasing number of non-native healthcare professionals in their organizations because if diversity is a necessity the maintenance of healthcare tradition and enhancing the facility is an ultimate objective for healthcare administrators. The diversity of healthcare force is almost inevitable and administrators are required to manage these professional with assorted background knowledge and understanding of the local requirements and standards in healthcare organizations. Areas of concern for administrators in a multicultural environment range from social approaches to financial concerns of this diversified workforce. This increases the burden of management and administrators have to be more compassionate because a satisfied workforc e is the primary requirement for an efficient and effective healthcare organization. The administrator has to keep in mind the workforce concerns and demands. Administrator in a multicultural health organization provides essential interfacing between the healthcare professionals and the community. The issues that stems from the interaction of culturally diverse workforce and communities constitute a major area where the role of leadership and management can make a difference in the delivery of healthcare services.

How We Can Make the World a Better Place Essay Example for Free
How We Can Make the World a Better Place Essay Every day, and I mean every day, the world slowly gets a better chance of surviving an epidemic. But every day, the world slightly perishes and begins to crumble. And I donââ¬â¢t mean literally crumble. Maybe just a little. But anyways the world starts becoming a bad place to live in. Whether itââ¬â¢s from pollution or foreign matter. But I will be talking about pollution mostly. People pollute every second of the day. Iââ¬â¢m serious. And the bad thing is that there may not be a way to stop these people from polluting. Governments and agencies have tried numerous times to encourage people to stop even if itââ¬â¢s slowly at a time. And now they try to help by coming out with electric cars and allow recycling more often. Yet is it enough? It may be but then again itââ¬â¢s most likely not. You see, the sun lets light in so we can see and have nutrients. And there is the little thing called the ozone layer that keeps a little of the sun in but not a lot of it. With the ozone layer, the heat and light from the sun bounces back towards itself. Like I said, the ozone layer only allows a little of the sun in. yet, by pollution the ozone layer becomes thinner and thinner allowing more sun to come in and fry us. Iââ¬â¢ll break it down for you. Lets take smoke from refineries or a car. The smoke goes in to the air and mixes with the clouds. But some of that smokes breaks through and collides with the ozone layer causing erosion which makes the ozone layer thinner, allowing more sun in. Pollution is bad! But thatââ¬â¢s not the only kind of pollution. Lets talk about out lovely streets and plants. Although its hard to call them lovely. Take an ordinary beautiful garden maintained by caring people. Example: Bob waters his garden and clears it of weeds regularly. Everyone who walks by tells Bob that his garden is beautiful with a capital B. yet what Bob and all the others donââ¬â¢t know is that under that beautiful garden lies deadly fumes that slowly kill the flowers. A year later, Bob finds his garden unexpectedly dying. What Bob also doesnââ¬â¢t know is that the house that was built on his wonderful grass has eroded over the past few years allowing the deadly material of the house to seep underground and spread throughout the yard. Therefore, killing his beautiful garden. The End. Or is it? Every day we pass by trash on the streets and donââ¬â¢t bother to pick it up. Some donââ¬â¢t because they are lazy and some others donââ¬â¢t because they are embarrassed. Id sometimes be counted as the one with embarrassment. But not always. Anyways, what Iââ¬â¢m proposing is that instead of ignoring all those boring environmental commercials onà television, we should actually listen to them and join hands to erase all the pollution. After that problem is wiped out, weââ¬â¢d have a better place to live in and live a longer, healthier life. But first if we must start little, then itââ¬â¢s best if we start with the trash we see on our own streets. Recycle more often too. It really helps get waste off the street. Join community service programs and aim for captain of the litter removal club. Just talk to your counselor or environmental adviser. In my own opinion, I know you will be the best. Thank you.

Prozac :: essays research papers
Prozac Classification à à à à à Fluoxetine is a legal prescribed medication (Fluoxetine, 2000). The brand name of this drug is Prozac (Fluoxetine, 2000). Fluoxetine belongs in a category of drugs called selective serotonin prescription (PDR, 2000). This is a synthetic drug (Fluoxetine, 2000).reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) (PDR, 2000). Prozac is not a controlled substance but needs a Usage à à à à à Prozac is used as an antidepressant, antiobsessional and antibulimic medication (Fluoxetine, 2000). Prozac is presumed to inhibit the reuptake of serotonin (Fluoxetine, 2000). In patients with depression it relieves symptoms of the illness (Fluoxetine, 2000). For those with bulimia nervosa Prozac was shown to decrease binge eating and purging when compared to a placebo (Fluoxetine, 2000). In obsessive-compulsive disorder it significantly reduces the symptoms (Fluoxetine, 2000). Usage: Epidemiology à à à à à The use of Prozac is so wide spread that since its release over ten years ago thirty-five million have been prescribed world wide in over one hundred different countries (PDR, 2000). Over seventeen million patients have been prescribed Prozac in the United States alone (PDR, 2000). Prozac is the worlds most prescribed antidepressant (PDR, 2000). Warnings à à à à à Allergic reactions have been noted in some patients; these include: rash, fever, edema, and carpal tunnel syndrome (Fluoxetine, 2000). If these reactions persist and no other cause can be found treatment with Prozac should be discontinued (Fluoxetine, 2000). Precautions à à à à à During the clinical trials anxiety and nervousness were reported by ten to fifteen percent of patients (Fluoxetine, 2000). Persons already underweight and depressed showed significant weight loss when on Prozac (Fluoxetine, 2000). Prozac should be used with caution in patients with convulsive disorders (Flouxinte, 2000). The possibility of suicide is greater in those patients who are depressed; therefore Prozac should be administer with supervision to these patients (Fluoxetine, 2000). This medication should be only given to patients with anorexia nervosa if the benefits outweigh the risks (Fluoxetine, 2000). Prozac became the worlds most prescribed antidepressant herald of its ââ¬Å"transformative powersâ⬠(Cash, Brown, 2000). Among side effects are appetite reduction and weight loss (Cash, Brown, 2000). In a study of college age women the knowledge of prozacs weight loss properties increased the likelihood of a woman deciding to try the drug (Cash, Brown, 2000). The women said they would choose Prozac regardless of the side effects if one of the main effects was weight loss (Cash, Brown, 2000). Womenââ¬â¢s perceived notions about being thin outweighed their concerns about the possible negative side effects of Prozac (Cash, Brown, 2000). Patients with diabetes may have altered glycemic rates while on this medication (Fluoxetine, 2000). I have found conflicting reports on the use of Prozac and the pregnant woman. I will give them both consideration in this report. Prozac :: essays research papers Prozac Classification à à à à à Fluoxetine is a legal prescribed medication (Fluoxetine, 2000). Behavioral study of obedience
This article represents a detailed account of the research carried out by Stanley Miligram at Yale University. The study was set to investigate the negative / destructive side of obedience. It involved more than 40 grown-up American volunteers representing diverse professions that ranged from laborers to great scholars. They were briefed on the research main objectives and selected to either play the role of experimenter, subject (teacher) or victim (learner). The experiment carried out in Yaleââ¬â¢s laboratory required a naive subject to administer electric ââ¬Å"shockâ⬠gradually as a form of punishment to a victim each time the victim answered wrongly to a question. The shock generator was graded in intervals of 15 volts with thirty such grades. Each time the victim answered wrongly the subject was under instructions from the experimenter to press a button that connected to the graduated shock generator system that increased the voltage by a margin of 15 volts. The purpose of the study as explained by Milgram was to investigate how human beings respond to authority (power).Though naturally it is difficult for immorally upright person to administer electric shock to another innocent person, it was interesting when milligramââ¬â¢s subjects went on to administer fatal shocks to the victims. This confirms that human beings are powerless and are likely to succumb to authority by obeying its orders even if they are against the fundamental moral standards. Answers to reflection question about the study. The Milgram experiment consisted of three key players i. e. the experimenter, the subject, and the victim.Out of these three players it is the subject who plays the core part of the experiment. The subjectsââ¬â¢ behavior is what Milgram was looking for in his bid to study the behavior of human obedience. For instance, if a subject chooses to obey the experimentersââ¬â¢ orders and go on with administering the electric shock then he or she is being ob edient but if not he or she is defying orders.According to (psychology 101, chapter 8, section 3) on obedience and power Milgramââ¬â¢s subjects behaved obediently because of the force of following the legitimate power i. e. they are under authority from the experimenter to administer electric shocks to their victims. Therefore when compared to Naziââ¬â¢s extermination of Jews in death camps and gas chambers during the holocaust, their behavior is certainly not different. They both knew that it is against the basic human morals to apply electric shock, or murder people by gassing but they play obedient to authority. Ethically any act that brings suffering/ uncomfortability to a human being is considered inhuman; however, this was not the case with Milgramââ¬â¢s experiment. It would have been unethical if the subjects were in the first place forced to take part in the experiment, secondly the subjects were initially briefed on the authenticity of the electric shock ââ¬âthe shocks could not cause permanent tissue damage. Again, though the experiment was painful its discomfort was momentary compared with its worthy scientific gains. The subjects although paid to participate in the experiment, they were assured that the money was just for their coming to the laboratory and not what they did afterwards. This research though carried out before establishment of Ethics Review Committees it drew numerous questions regarding its effects to the basic ethics and morals of human beings. But going by the previous brutal actions committed to people out of blind adherence to orders, a controlled study was needed to investigate the reasons as to why German police cops contrary to their conscience murdered millions of Jews under the command of Hitler. The research was purely based on willing volunteer basis; the participants were briefed on the effects of the electric shock to the victims. It is therefore inclined to the advancement of worthwhile knowledge about learnin g and memory. It was conducted by reputable personnel (Yale University). The selection of participants was done fairly, and lastly the study was concluded by ââ¬Å"debriefingâ⬠the participants in order to iron out any feelings of hatred on the part of the subjects and their victims. On the other hand the study had its dark side, the fact that subjects were ordered to administer electric shock to their victims which to them was morally degrading is one of the reasons many Ethics Review Committees would give out in trying to bar such an experiment.Again, the screams and groans made by victims due to extreme tension are another reason these committees would give out. The research was most successful because the participants were deceived into believing that the selection of who plays subject or victim was fairly done. This was one of Milgramââ¬â¢s trump cards of making sure that the naive participants play the part of the subject in order to increase the credibility of the fi ndings. Further the shock generator was not a real one; it was designed to cheat the public that indeed the victims were being shocked. However the experiment can be conducted in a more ââ¬Å"realâ⬠way in order to eradicate any element of doubt. This research could have been made real by using real teachers and real learners; a teacher is required to first give out strict instructions to the learners on the real consequences of answering wrongly to the given quiz. Real punishment (real electric shock or any other ethically acceptable punishment) may be administered to any wrong answer given, by doing that the learners will therefore try to obey (answer correctly or else get punished). The act of ââ¬Å"debriefingâ⬠after the experiment was necessary to eradicate any ill feelings towards the subjects. They were made to believe that no real shock was administered to the victims. However this was an exercise in futility because the subjects were free to discontinue with the s hock administering, if they felt it was against their morals but the majority continued with the exercise. Therefore making them believe they had not administered real shocks was adding more psychological stress because they had already broken their morals and hence it was meaningless to convince them into believing.According to (Sojourners magazine, by MacNutt, Francis 2004) also based on Milgramââ¬â¢s experiment, many ordinary people are afraid of being disapproved and therefore carry out acts which are incompatible with the basic moral standards. Therefore the chances of any subject defying experimenterââ¬â¢s orders are slim and therefore if I were one of the experimenters I would not hesitate but would have carried on with the electric shocking business. A more solid explanation to this is the case a confident businessman who almost succumbed to tension went ahead and executed all the experimenterââ¬â¢s orders.Psychology generally deals with peopleââ¬â¢s behavior; so me extreme behaviors were exhibited by morally upright people e. g. the perpetration of mass slaughter of Jews during the holocaust, the Hoffling hospital case whereby nurses ejected lethal doses of a ââ¬Å"fictionalâ⬠drug to their patients (Hofling C. K et al, 1966). Such behaviors needed to be studied in order to arrive at a generalization, therefore Milgramââ¬â¢s study was fundamental to social psychology, a study that investigates how people influence the beliefs, feelings, and behaviors of others. The study findings gave a basis to many generalizations that makes up the core pillars of psychology. Again, the findings of this study are of great relevance to todayââ¬â¢s human beings actions; other studies continue to be done with great reference to this study. For instance, obedience and power ââ¬â a sub section of greater social psychology branch of psychology, draws its relevance from Milgramââ¬â¢s findings (psychology 101, chapter 8, section 3).This carefull y executed study send a very loaded message to numerous questions asked by people of sound reasoning on morals on why German corps unquestioningly obeyed Hitlerââ¬â¢s orders by gassing millions of Jews, whether Germans are different from other people, why catholic bishops stressed obedience to Caesar and Christ among other questions. The answer to these questions was that human being are bound to behave obediently to orders given by people whom they identify with, and whom they perceive to hold a legitimate position higher than them. Conclusions Milgramââ¬â¢s research on obedience to power is a milestone to the general study of psychology; however the study was purely based on a volunteer and wiling basis. This serves to discredit the studyââ¬â¢s credibility, because the experimenters, subjects and victims are under no imminent consequence should they choose to defy the orders. For instance 14 subjects defied orders after their victims literally refused to respond to questio ns.However, the major objective of the research was adequately achieved, although those participants who failed to play obedience negatively affected the full achievement of those objectives. Further deceiving the participants was not a strong point towards the overall credibility of the study; Milgram could have provided a more ââ¬Å"realââ¬â¢ study with a morally acceptable punishment e. g. the case of Hoffling hospital (Hofling C. K et al, 1966).ReferencesPsychology 101, Obedience and power, available at: http://allpsych. com/psychology101/obedience_power. html, accessed on October 17, 2008Sojourners magazine, by MacNutt, Francis 2004, available at; http://findarticles. com/p/articles/mi_qa4010/is_200410/ai_n9441346, accessed on October 17, 2008.Behavior Study of obedience, by Milgram, Stanley, available at; http://www. wadsworth. com/psychology_d/templates/student_resources/0155060678_rathus/ps/ps01. html, accessed on October 17, 2008.Hofling CK et al. Filipino Migrant Woman
Migration When the Light of Home is Abroad: Unskilled Female Migration and the Filipino Family * The article focuses on the Filipino female population migrating to Singapore and the difficulties they face while in their host country. Through interviews and extensive research the authors explore the relationships between Filipino migrant women and their families. The authors state, ââ¬Å"Specifically, we explore how migrant women and their family members define and negotiate family ideals, gender identities and family relationships, given the familyââ¬â¢s transnational configuration. In other words, with women ââ¬â regarded as the ââ¬Å"light of the homeâ⬠(ilaw ng tahanan) ââ¬â away from the family, how is family constituted and family life crafted by its constituent members both at home and abroad? â⬠(Asis, Huang, Yeoh 199). * The idea of transnational family, having a bond while living in a host country, is interrelated with labour migrants. The authors define s transnational family as, ââ¬Å"one where core members are distributed in two or more nation states but continue to share strong bonds of collective welfare and unity ââ¬â is a strategic response to the changing social, economic and political conditions of a globalizing worldâ⬠(Asis, Huang, Yeoh 199). * Female migrants are constantly negotiating their identity and their role in their host countries which leads them to maintain ties through engaging actively or disengaging themselves from their families. Long distance calls from the migrant to the families is an example of active pursuit. The authors describe this constant negotiation of a migrantââ¬â¢s identity as ââ¬Å"relativisingâ⬠(Asis, Huang, Yeoh 200). The concept of ââ¬Å"relativisingâ⬠could also be formed through cultural differences from host countries. * Philippines, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka are three countries in Southeast Asia which encompass the largest amount of female migration. The authors states, ââ¬Å"The Philippines is one of three countries in Asia where women migrants comprise between 60 and 80 percent of legal migrants deployed to other countries every yearâ⬠(Asis, Huang, Yeoh 203).Filipino women migrants increased due to a shift in labour needs during the 1980s. * The authorââ¬â¢s research provides interviews with female migrants and their families in Singapore and Philippines. The interview raises awareness of female migrantââ¬â¢s loss of connectivity with family members, especially children. Many children felt the absence of their mother shaped their family relationship in a negative context. In one example, two male children dropped out of school and upon their motherââ¬â¢s arrival the children returned back to school. In this case the mother is seen as the enforcer which entails drives the children to attend school. The lack of face to face interaction between the female migrant and her family causes negative consequences to the migrant hers elf as well as her family. * The article also discusses the positive outcomes for female migrants while in their host country. Many of the migrants felt empowered by being able to provide a better life for their family. Many of the women provide remittances which in turn allowed for rebuilding of homes, school expenses, and food.Another positive outcome for female migrants was the respect they embraced from their husbands upon returning to their country of origin. Questions * How does the reconfiguration gender role affect female labour migrants while in their host country? * Filipino female migration alters the ââ¬Å"family relationshipâ⬠and in doing so constructs a gap between the mothers and children. Is the economical factor worth the risk of losing the bond between the migrantââ¬â¢s children and the migrant hence affecting education for the children? * Can labour migrants maintain a sense of family and does the term ââ¬Å"familyâ⬠alter when absent from the coun try of origin?

Beliefs of Islam Essays
Beliefs of Islam Essays Beliefs of Islam Essay Beliefs of Islam Essay What are the central beliefs of Islam, and how are they reflected in the Five Pillarsâ⬠(McInerney, 2003)? Which of the Five Pillars do you feel would be easiest to fulfill, and which would be the most challenging (McInerney, 2003)? The Islam was founded in Mecca, Saudi Arabia around 622 CE by Muhammad, a camel driver. It is the second largest religion in the world and is worshiped in mosques throughout the Middle East and North Africa. The basic beliefs of Islam are known as the Five Doctrines of Islamic Faith. They include a belief in the absolute unity of God, belief in angels, belief in prophets, belief in scriptures, and belief in the Final Judgment. Islam has the ââ¬Å"Five Pillarsâ⬠also known as ââ¬Å"acts of worshipâ⬠The Five Pillars outline the minimal obligations required of a Muslim. They are said to be the framework for a Muslim life: faith, prayer, concern for the needy, self-purification, and the pilgrimage to Mecca. The first Pillar is Al-Shahada (Declaration of Faith). It says that all must pronounce their faith to enter into Islam in front of witnesses. Also that Allah is the only one and thing worthy of worship. The second Pillar is Salat (Prayer). Prayer required of all Muslim adults after they reach a certain age and it is done daily, five times, for around five to ten minutes each time. The third Pillar is Zakat (Charity). Muslims believe that all wealth belongs to God, and God wishes for Muslims to be generous. Zakat is the required giving of a portion of ones savings to charity at the end of each year. The fourth Pillar is Sawm (Fasting). All Muslims are required to fast during Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. The purpose of fasting is always to cleanse the body and soul, and shift the attention from bodily needs to spiritual needs. During times of fasting, Muslims are prohibited from eating, drinking, smoking and engaging in sexual intercourse from sunrise to sunset. The fifth and final Pillar is Hajj (Pilgrimage). All Muslims, except for those physically or financially unable, must make a pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in their life. In my opinion I think that Zakat (Charity) would be the easiest to fulfill. A example would be : giving food to the hungry, sick, or poor. I think that with my busy schedule Salat (Prayer) would be the most challenging in the scene that I would have to stop for prayer five times for ten minutes each time throughout the day. Analysing The Grameen Bank Of Bangladesh Economics Essay
Analysing The Grameen Bank Of Bangladesh Economics Essay Grameen Bank (GB) is called the bank of poor people in Bangladesh. It has been established for the welfare of the poor village people of Bangladesh, which becomes a role model of the world of micro credit banking system. At the beginnings of Microcredit, Dr. Muhammed Yunus who is an economist educated in the United States of America, although originally from Bangladesh, introduced the world to the notion of micro-credit in the 1970ââ¬â¢s. Counts (1996) said that Muhammed Yunus talked with the poor village people and discover that general local bank never shows interest to provide loan to poor people and does not lend them and they had to borrow money from extortionate moneylenders with high interest rates. As a result, they ended up more-or-less permanently in debt and any money they made went to pay the interest on these high-interest loans. Yunus became conscious at that moment that the poor problems were in some ways no different from anyone else: low interest credit was a nec essity of life. Definition of Micro Credit Auwal (1996): An extremely small loan given to impoverished people to help them become self employed. Also known as ââ¬Å"micro lending.â⬠This small loans extension (microloans) to those in poverty designed to spur entrepreneurship. These loans especially given to a poor person to enable him or herself to become self employed. Financial services loaned a small amounts of money usually around $50-$150 to poor people as a capital of a small business to start or extend it. The Grameen Bank in Bangladesh has become a model of successful micro loan provider. Principles of Microcredit: General financing or credit. It emphasizes building capacity of a micro-entrepreneur. Employment generation. Trust building. Socioeconomic development. Help the micro entrepreneur on during difficult. Advantage of Microcredit Soeama (2004): Source and cost of funding: ââ¬Å" In order for the Microfinance institutions to loan they need funding too and a stab le microfinance institution might have a competitive advantage of low cost of funds which enables it to provide finance at low cost. Infrastructure set up: Microfinance companies must have a required network and infrastructure to deliver these services. The Grameen Bank of Bangladesh creates and implements this structure in rural village area. Image: MFIââ¬â¢s are many times criticized as money squeezing machines which charge very high cost. Which is not necessarily true considering their cost of funds and risks moreover they have to be sustainable. So here I think having a good name, image and Top management team helps a lot.â⬠Disadvantages of Micro Credit: Although microcredits are the keystone in terms of development in poor countries, it can also have its difficult. Indeed, the disadvantages of microcredits are: Some microcredit institutions are often unpredictable. Refunding problems. Budget depends on subsidises from the government or NGOs. Fig 1: Current Microcredit Network of Grameen Bank History of Grameen Bank: ââ¬Å"The founder of Grameen Bank Muhammad Yunus open up the idea of ââ¬Ëmicro-creditââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬âminuscule loans to the very poor. The bank currently lends more than $500 million a year with a repayment rate of better than 97 percent. Its Group Savings Funds have assets of $186 million. Grameen Bank operates 1,100 branches in half of Bangladeshââ¬â¢s nearly 80,000 villages. The program has been successfully replicated in dozens of countries, including the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, South Africa, and Bolivia. It has also been applied to inner city and rural poverty in rich nations in North America and Europe.

Correctional Officers Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words - 3
Correctional Officers - Essay Example In many cases female candidates with many years of work experience and efficiency were not allowed to be promoted only because of the reason that they were females. The ability of the female correctional officers will often be questioned by the administration and they are always doubted by the male co-workers. The female correctional officers will have to work extra hard to prove themselves. à Because of the nature of work and the high stress level in the corrections, it will be difficult to leave work at the workplace and therefore it becomes difficult for them to relax at home. Women are mostly not hired in male prisons because of the growing concern about their security and safety and there is also a possibility of violation of privacy of the inmates. The male prison administrators and the male guards found the presence of women as a problem. The courts have often recognized that there is always a possibility of assault on female correctional officers. There is also inequality in jobà assignments to the women correctional officers especially in cases where there is a need of direct contact with the inmates. ââ¬Å"The ambiguous and contradictory court rulings have provided no clear, definitive direction for resolution of the conflict between the equal employment rights of women correctional officers and the privacy rights of male inmatesâ⬠(Tewksbury & Collins, 2013). Some of the researchers are of the view that the amount of psychological stress faced by the female officers has caused health concerns for them. The experience of the women correctional officers is complicated and filled with broken barriers. The male superior officers also sometimes do not provide the important information with respect to inmate interaction, which can help them to succeed professionally. The amount of freedom provided to the female correctional officers is minimum and they are made to work for longer hours. Senior male officers also disregard them in the context of their training and their social interactions and they also tend to exercise excessive supervision on them. The environment in theà correctional system does not give the required trust and respect to female officers. The possibilityà ofà sexual harassment by the inmates as well as colleagues is also another problem faced by the female correctional officers. Question 28 of 30 Summarize the management problems that special need inmates pose for corrections officials? à For this study, the special ââ¬Å"populations are defined as those prisoners who exhibit unique physical, mental, social, and programmatic needs that distinguish them from other prisoners and for whom jail and prison management and staff have to respond to in nontraditional and innovative waysâ⬠(Stojkovic, 2005, p. 3). Correction officials are most often unable to effectively manage and supervise special need population of prisoners. The methods of management of the special need prisoners by the correctio nal leaders are many times questioned. Traditional methods of treatment of prisoners will not suit special needs inmates. In the traditional method, the issues of physical and mental health are not primary consideration. If the special needs population has to be effectively managed, the existing policies will have to be altered and innovative methods adopted.
