MacBeth versions comparison essay Essay
There are many differences between interpretations of William Shakespeareââ¬â¢s MacBeth. This essay wall contrast Shakespeareââ¬â¢s original version and a movie version by Roman Polanski produced in 1970. Three major differences will be discussed. One difference between Shakespeareââ¬â¢s and Polanskiââ¬â¢s version is the absence of the scene in England in Polanskiââ¬â¢s version. In the Original MacBeth, MacDuff goes to England to convince Malcolm to return and fight MacBeth. The scene of the longest of the play; it is very drawn out and lengthy. Polanski simply eliminates this scene and shows Malcolm back in Scotland. The reason I feel that Polanski did this is that the scene detracts from the continuity and action of the play. The play is equally effective without the scene, and more streamlined. Another difference between the original and Polanskiââ¬â¢s version is the scene where MacBeth kills the king, Duncan. In the original, Shakespeare was not allowed to show the death of a divine right ruler, so he showed MacBeth coming out of the kingââ¬â¢s bedchamber after he had committed the murder. For Polanskiââ¬â¢s version, however, he had no such limitation, and could show anything that he chose, so he showed the actual murder of Duncan, where Duncan wakes up, and MacBeth cuts his throat after stabbing him. The reason that Polanski inserted this scene was to show how cold-blooded MacBeth was, and that he would do anything to achieve his goal of becoming king. A third difference is the use of the letter that MacBeth writes to his wife describing how he has become Thane of Cawdor and the witchesââ¬â¢ three predictions. In the original, the letter was read by Lady MacBeth, and then not mentioned again. In Polanskiââ¬â¢s version, Lady MacBeth takes out the letter after everything with her and her husbandââ¬â¢s plan has gone wrong, reads it, and then kills herself. The reason that Polanski did this is that the letter is a useful device to cause Lady MacBeth to kill herself. She reads the letter, and itââ¬â¢s all this happy news, but she and MacBeth are miserable, and all the good things in the letter have gone awry. There are scenes also in Polanskiââ¬â¢s version which are not even included in the original. One of these such scenes would be the scene where the traitors from the war are being executed. They are brutally hung with cast iron brackets on their neck. This scene is very successful in showing the brutal treatment of traitors, the treatment that MacBeth would get if he was caught in his plan. The original did not do such a good job on this. Another of these such scenes would be the dreams that MacBeth has about Fleance killing him and Banquo helping him. Due to the extreme lack of technology in Shakespeareââ¬â¢s time, this was not possible. The dreams sequence serves to show how haunted MacBethââ¬â¢s dreams are, and how worried he is about losing the throne to Fleance because of the witchesââ¬â¢ predictions. There are many differences between these two version of MacBeth, and each of them, I believe, serves itââ¬â¢s own purpose to enhance and better the play.

For the upcoming film based on the memoir Essay
Twelve Years a Slave (1853; sub-title: Narrative of Solomon Northup, a citizen of New-York, kidnapped in Washington city in 1841, and rescued in 1853, from a cotton plantation near the Red River in Louisiana), by Solomon Northup as told to David Wilson, is a memoir of a black man who was born free in New York state but kidnapped, sold into slavery and kept in bondage for 12 years in Louisiana before the American Civil War. He provided details of slave markets in Washington, DC, as well as describing at length cotton cultivation on major plantations in Louisiana. Published soon after Harriet Beecher Stoweââ¬â¢s novel, Uncle Tomââ¬â¢s Cabin, Northupââ¬â¢s book sold 30,000 copies and was considered a bestseller.[1] It went through several editions in the nineteenth century. Supporting Stoweââ¬â¢s fictional narrative in detail, Northupââ¬â¢s first-hand account of his twelve years of bondage proved another bombshell[peacock term] in the nationalpolitical debate over slavery leading up to the Civil War, drawing endorsements from major Northern newspapers, anti-slavery organizations, and evangelical groups. After several editions in the 19th Century, the book fell into obscurity for nearly 100 years, until it was re-discovered by two Louisiana historians, Dr. Sue Eakin (Louisiana State University at Alexandria) and Dr. Joseph Logsdon (University of New Orleans).[2] In the early 1960ââ¬â¢s they researched and retraced Solomon Northupââ¬â¢s journey[3] and co-edited a historically annotated version that was published by LSU Press in 1968. [4] A 2013 film based on the story and directed by Steve McQueen is scheduled for release by Fox Searchlight Pictures on October 18, 2013. Contents [hide] 1 Synopsis 2 Reception and historical value 3 Editions and adaptations 4 References 5 External links Synopsis[edit] In Upstate New York, black freeman Solomon Northup, a skilled carpenter and fiddler, is approached by two circus promoters who offer him a brief, high-paying job with their traveling circus. Without informing his wife, who is away at work in the next town, he travels with the strangers towards Washington DC in good spirits. One morning, he wakes to find himself drugged, bound, and in the cell of a slave pen. When Northup asserts his rights as a freeman, he is beaten and warned never again to mention his free life in New York. Transported by ship to New Orleans, Northup and other enslaved blacks contract smallpox and some die. In transit, Northup implores a sympathetic sailor to send a letter to his family. The letter arrives safely, but, lacking knowledge of his final destination, Northupââ¬â¢s family is unable to effect his rescue. Northupââ¬â¢s first owner is William Ford, a cotton planter on a bayou of the Red River, and he subsequently has several other owners during his twelve-year bondage. At times, his carpentry and other skills mean he is treated relatively well, but he also suffers extreme cruelty. On two occasions, he is attacked by a man who is to become his owner, John Tibeats, and finds himself unable to resist retaliating, for which he suffers great reprisals. Later he is sold to Edwin Epps, a notoriously cruel planter, who gives Northup the role of driver, requiring him to oversee the work of fellow slaves and punish them for undesirable behavior. Never, in almost 12 years, does he reveal his true history to a single slave or owner. Finally he confides his story in Samuel Bass, a white carpenter from Canada. Bass sends a letter to Northupââ¬â¢s wife, who calls on Henry Northup, a white attorney whose family once held and then freed Solomon Northupââ¬â¢s father. Henry Northup contacts New York state officials and the governor appoints him as an agent to travel to Louisiana and free Solomon Northup. He succeeds, and Solomon Northup leaves the plantation. After instigating a court case against the men who sold him into slavery, Northup is reunited with his family in New York. Reception and historical value[edit] Northupââ¬â¢s account describes the daily life of slaves at Bayou Boeuf in Louisiana, their diet and living conditions, the relationship between the master and slave, and the means that slave catchers had used to recapture runaways. Northupââ¬â¢s slave narrative has details similar to those of some other authors, such as Frederick Douglass, Harriet Ann Jacobs, or William Wells Brown, but he was unique in being kidnapped as a free man and sold into slavery. His book was a bestseller, rapidly selling 30,000 copies in the years before the American Civil War.[1] After additional printings in the 19th century, the book went out-of-print until 1968,[4] when historians Joseph Logsdon and Sue Eakin restored it to prominence. Dr. Eakin first discovered the story as a child growing up in Louisiana plantation country. Dr. Logsdonââ¬â¢s discovery occurred when a student from an old Louisiana family brought to class a copy of the original 1853 book that had been in her family for over a century. Together Logsdon and Eakin validated Solomon Northupââ¬â¢s tale by retracing his journey through Bayou Boeuf plantation country in central Louisiana where his bondage took place, through the slave sales records of New Orleans and Washington, D.C., and further documented his New York State origins, his fatherââ¬â¢s freemanââ¬â¢s decree, and the legal work which restored Northupââ¬â¢s freedom and prosecuted his abductors. In 1968, Eakin and Logsdonââ¬â¢s heavily footnoted edition of the original book was published by Louisiana State University Press, shedding new light on Northupââ¬â¢s story and establishing its historic significance. That book has been widely used by scholars and in classrooms for over fifty years and is still in print. In 1998 Logsdon received a call from scholars in upstate New York inviting him to participate in a search for Solomonââ¬â¢s grave, however bad weather prevented the search and Logsdon died the following June (1999). In 2007, Dr. Eakin completed development of an updated and expanded version that includes over 150 pages of new background material, maps, and photographs shortly before her death at age 90. In 2013, e-book and audiobook versions of her final definitive edition were released in her honor. With permission, scholars may use Eakinââ¬â¢s lifetime archives through The Sue Eakin Collection, LSU at Alexandria, La. The Joseph Logsdon Archives are available at the University of New Orleans. Historian Jesse Holland noted in a 2009 interview that he had relied on Northupââ¬â¢s memoir and detailed description of Washington in 1841 to identify the location of some slave markets. Holland has also researched the roles of ethnic African slaves as skilled laborers who helped build some of the important public buildings in Washington, including the Capitol and part of the original Executive Mansion.[5]

Analyzing Dr. Martin Luther King And Malcolm X Vision For Equality And Freedom From Racism In The 1950s And 70s
Analyzing Dr. Martin Luther King And Malcolm X Vision For Equality And Freedom From Racism In The 1950s And 70s Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr both had a vision of equality and freedom from oppression for the African-Americans during the 1950s to 1970s. Although sharing a vision, they differed in background, religion, and opinions whether racial inequality should be approached with active and immediate change making (Haley Malcolm X, 2001) or with passive change making and peace. King and Malcolm X grew up in disparate backgrounds. Malcolm X (originally Malcolm little) was born in Omaha, Nebraska on May 19 1925. He grew up with 7 siblings and a father (Earl Little) who was a Baptist minister and took part in civil rights activism (Haley Malcolm X). His father was under constant death threats from his activist movements and therefore his family was regularly moving until his house in Michigan was burnt down and his father killed by white supremacists (Haley Malcolm X, 2001). As a result, his mother was sent to a mental institution when suffering an emotional breakdown (Haley Malcolm X, 2001). Malcolm and his siblings were split among various orphanages and foster homes (Haley Malcolm X, 2001). At his age of 20, 1946, Malcolm was sentenced 10 years in prison for burglary but was released after 7 years on parole for good behavior (Haley Malcolm X, 2001). While he was in prison, he developed a curiosity for teachings of Nations of Islam (NOI) leader Elijah M uhammad. By 1952 Malcolm was a devoted Muslim with a new surname ââ¬ËXââ¬â¢ as he considered ââ¬ËLittleââ¬â¢ as a slave name (Haley Malcolm X, 2001). Later, owing to his outstanding leadership characters, he was appointed as a minister and national spokesman for the NOI (Haley Malcolm X, 2001). He manipulated the media well to spread the teaching of the NOI, increased the NOIââ¬â¢s membership from 500 to 30000 in 11 years and found the Muslim Mosque, Inc. (Haley Malcolm X, 2001). Martin Luther King Jr was born on January 15 1929, Atlanta Georgia. He grew up in a stable family with his 2 siblings and his father also a Baptist minister who protested against segregation. Although suffering depression during his teenage years and made a suicide attempt, he received a substantial high school education and graduated college with a B.A degree in sociology, later received a Bachelor of Divinity and a Ph.D. degree on 1955. He decided to serve as a Baptist minister as he had an ââ¬Å"inner urge to serve the humanityâ⬠(Wikipedia, Martin Luther King Jr) King and Malcolm X differed in the context of their teaching. King encouraged his followers to follow a non-violent approach towards equality and show love and understanding for their enemies which was to result in a racially harmonized and a peaceful society (i.e. the ââ¬ËBrotherhoodââ¬â¢). On the contrary, Malcolm X had ideas of non-violent approach being a deception to keep black people under oppression and being defenseless. He believed in a society of black supremacy and separatism. King and Malcolm X had contrasted in the methods of approach towards equality. King organized several boycotts and demonstrations with the emphasis on peace and non-violence as he believed that violence is self-defeating and also said, quoting the Bible: 2) ââ¬Å"those who live by the sword will perish by the swordâ⬠in the Montgomery Bus Boycott interview. For example: ââ¬ËMontgomery Bus Boycottââ¬â¢, and ââ¬ËFreedom Ridesââ¬â¢ were protests where, under Kingââ¬â¢s lead, violence and retaliation were in absence. In contrast, Malcolm X urged his followers to defend themselves against aggression ââ¬Å"by any means necessaryâ⬠. Malcolm X also said (during an interview at the University of California, Berkeley) 3) ââ¬Å"send the guerrillas to Mississippiâ⬠so that the black victims of violence can have armed protection. King and Malcolm X had differed in their attitudes towards the white people who oppressed them as they differed in religion and thought. King (based on his Christian faith and Mahatma Gandhiââ¬â¢s non-violent resistance) had an attitude of forgiveness, brotherhood and 1) ââ¬Å"turning the other cheekâ⬠(bio, Martin Luther King Jr. Biography, 2016) (i.e. not resisting or revenging your enemies but letting them do what they do). Hence King had an attitude of love, forgiveness and acceptance towards those who oppressed the black people. On the other hand, Malcolm X (as he was taught by an Islam leader, Elijah Muhammad) saw the white men as the evils that, his God, ââ¬ËAllahââ¬â¢ would later destroy and punish. Hence, he saw the black people as superior and people who need to be separated from the white people. Therefore he had a bitter attitude towards any white people as he believed in black supremacy and as he said: ââ¬Å"heââ¬â¢s (white man) only brotherly when he wants to exploit you, exploit, oppress.â⬠(YouTube, MALCOLM X INTERVIEW AT UC BERKELEY) King and Malcolm X took part in movement groups with opposing ideas. King was a member of ââ¬ËThe Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committeeââ¬â¢ (SNCC), ââ¬ËSouthern Christian Leadership Conferenceââ¬â¢ (SCLC) and ââ¬ËNational Association for the Advancement of the Colored Peopleââ¬â¢ (NAACP). These organizations were non-violent, peaceful groups that mostly organized peaceful marches. In contrast, Malcolm X was a part of the ââ¬ËNation of Islamââ¬â¢ (NOI) until he left in 1964 with intentions to create Black Nationalist party. Although he didnââ¬â¢t take part, he supported the idea of ââ¬ËBlack Powerââ¬â¢ movement for its idea of retaliation for self-defense. King and Malcolm X had a similarity in their goals of ending oppression for the black people. Malcolm X, as it says in his autobiography: ââ¬Å"My ultimate goal is to bring about freedom, equality, and justice for black people in USA, complete respect and recognition as human beings.â⬠(Haley Malcolm X 2001) Therefore Malcolm X wants justice and equality. King, as he said in his I have a dream speech: ââ¬Å"I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal. I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.â⬠Hence he calls for equality. He also said: ââ¬Å"I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.â⬠(American Rhetoric, Martin Luther King Jr. I have a Dream) Here he calls for freedom and justice. Therefore, both Malcolm X and King had a vision of justice, freedom and equality for the oppressed black people in the USA. Malcolm X and King, although very different, both worked towards civil equality based on the teachings they had interest in and which they studied thoroughly and taught their beliefs on how equality was to be achieved through media and public speeches . Malcolm X was inspired by the NOI leader, Elijah Muhammadââ¬â¢s mentoring of white people being the evils of the world as the white society aspired to keep black people from achieving political, social and economic success (Haley Malcolm X, 2001). This set him on a mindset of retaliation, achieving equality ââ¬Å"by any means necessaryâ⬠(Haley Malcolm X, 2001) and a sense of black superiority. King studied Mohandas Gandhiââ¬â¢s resistance method of non-violence and non-retaliation (i.e. Gandhian technique) which was successful during the British oppression in India from 1800s. Also as a minister, King took in the Christian concept of non-retaliation (i.e. 1) ââ¬Å"turning the other cheekâ⬠) (English-Korean study B ible Matthew 5.39). The Gandhian technique and his Christian belief gave King the confidence in power of love for the enemy, and the attitude of 1) ââ¬Å"turning the other cheekâ⬠In conclusion, as Malcolm X and King both wanted equality for the oppressed African-Americans, they approached their vision in contrasting methods and beliefs. It was obvious that they differed in opinion as they experienced opposing childhoods, backgrounds, studies and religion. But they both aspired to achieve a free, justified and equal society for everyone in America by spreading their ideas using media and speeches. Addendum By ââ¬Å"turning the other cheekâ⬠in page 3 and 4, it means that when someone slaps you in your cheek let them slap the other side by turning the other cheek. This was from one of the teachings from Jesus Christ. He figuratively meant that when someone attacks you or harm you, donââ¬â¢t retaliate but rather let them do what they do because retaliation would only bring even more violence and harm, create enemies, and also because revenge is up to God (Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for Gods wrath, for it is written: It is mine to avenge; I will repay, says the Lord. Romans 12:19) On page 2 and 3, the phrase ââ¬Å"Those who live by the sword will perish by the swordâ⬠is a verse from Jeremiah 44:12. This verse summarizes up Kingââ¬â¢s attitude towards achieving equality as the verse means that those who work their way with injustice, violence or any other deceiving methods will come to a downfall from the same method. Hence King believed that should civil equality be achieved by violence and retaliation the equality would soon be disturbed by violence and retaliation. ââ¬Å"Send the guerrillas to Mississippiâ⬠on page 3 was a statement made by Malcolm X. By guerrillas he probably meant the armed civilian Black Power workers. He said this as he was aware of the brutality that African-Americans were receiving in Mississippi, a Southern state in the US, and as he wanted to stop the brutality.

Health promotion in physical activity Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Health promotion in physical activity - Essay Example This essay "Health promotion in physical activity" outlines how the modern lifestyle affects the level of obesity and the significance of the physical activity for the good health. The World Health Organization in 2004 implemented the WHO Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health (DPAS) which calls on member states, the private sector and public sector to implement policies that help in reducing and preventing chronic disease. The European Charter on Countering Obesity was also formed by WHO member states in the region on 16 November, 2006. However, even with the combined efforts of states in Europe, obesity is still on a continuous rise with alarming predictions of its prevalence in the future. Policies implemented to curb the pandemic need to focus on making the healthy choices easy, natural and desirable to the target groups. Four main sectors are tasked with the responsibility of incorporating physical activity in the lives of the citizens as much as possible. They are health, transport, urban planning and environment and occupation sectors. The health sector can start by promoting and engaging in inter-sectorial work at all levels, ensuring that health practitioners are motivated to promote physical activity to the public and also to lead by example. The transport sector needs to address the safety needs of cyclists and pedestrians, link with the health sector to harmonize their policies and to communicate the benefits of physically active transport as compared to using cars.
Homeless Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Homeless - Essay Example Especially after the recession struck, people were forced to give up their homes and live in the park in tents. (Reade, B., 2012) Many Americans are angered by the presence of these tent cities. For this group, having a home is synonymous to achieving something in oneââ¬â¢s life. Home ownership also means protection from bad elements outside the home. Regardless of the cons, this paper will attempt to explain that being homeless may actually be a good thing because it teaches the individuals to be more mature, to develop significant life skills, and to have enough money for other necessities. Being homelessness is NOT the way to live Roots Traditionally, people believe that there are three necessities in life. The three important things a person is supposed to have are clothing, food and shelter. (Wallace, n.d.) It is this concept that makes people associate shelter or a home with establishing roots. It is not hard to understand. Once a person is able, he or she invests in a home. This is where the individual will live with his loved ones. As such, the term ââ¬Å"settle downâ⬠was coined to mean oneââ¬â¢s act of planting his roots in his permanent abode. It is in the house that the person builds memories and mementos with his loved ones. Because of this mindset, the idea of losing this structure means to also lose the ability to make those memorable experiences. Security In the Home Alone movies, the protagonist was always fighting the bad guys from inside structures easily referred to as places of dwelling. This notion of being able to protect oneself in oneââ¬â¢s home is common to everyone. Each person can maneuver inside his or her own home with eyes closed. Homeowners know every crook and cranny of their houses that they feel more protected inside it than probably anywhere else in the world. It is this sense of security that people think they lose when they are devoid of a roof over their heads. Without something solid like the walls of their own homes protecting them, people feel very vulnerable. The American Dream The last reason why many people think being homeless is not good is because homelessness means they failed to accomplish their American Dream. When asked about what the American Dream is for them, almost nine out of ten people would always give ââ¬Ëowning a homeââ¬â¢ as an answer. Even long after the American society has accepted that a great recession has indeed come into their lives and caused them to lose their homes, many still believe real estate investment was the best thing they did. (Brennan, M.) Owning a home meant one was financially capable to meet the mortgage. Like owning a car, having oneââ¬â¢s own house was a status symbol for people who could afford getting a house. For this group, the idea that homelessness can actually bring good things to a person will be a hard-sell. Homelessness IS not that bad after all Savings Indeed having a home has a nice ring to it. Everyone wants to get t hat opportunity of waking up to their own place be it a house or an apartment. It gives a person a pleasant feeling knowing that he or she is heading purposely, after work or a night out with friends, to a place that is very familiar and comfortable where he or she can literally kick their shoes off and relax. However, this happy feeling comes with a large price tag in the form of mortgage payments because majority of Americans are still paying off their housing loans. In fact, this is why so many people are not in tent cities after

Effect of Unethical Behavior Article Analysis Essay
Effect of Unethical Behavior Article Analysis - Essay Example ituations are critical to be accurately identified and resolved to avoid any fraudulent activities like exploitation of financial statements, inside trading, kickbacks, etc by the companies and to make them abide by the accounting laws. As like modesty and ethics, obedience is also top of the list trait taught to younger generation by the elder ones. They are tamed to obey the authorities: parents in the beginning, later teachers and ultimately the Boss! One of the traps employees mostly fell into is ââ¬Å"follow what your boss is sayingâ⬠. They are pressured by the boss to behave in an un-ethical manner and tamper the numbers to overestimate companyââ¬â¢s value. The most damaging trait found in many people, whether they are aware of it or not is the inability to work with patience and view any problem or judgment from different angles. They want definite answers and jump to conclusions based on the first thing that comes to their minds. Strict work conditions such as time stress, fatigue, and etc work as a fuel to fire. Under such circumstances the employees are at high risk of taking short cuts and behave unethically by ignoring and not fully analyzing the facts. Many a timeââ¬â¢s exploitation of the financial facts is done in greed to gain benefits for the individual, company or for both. There might be some large percentage of shares involved for the individual from the benefit the company as a whole will receive because of the unethical activities. Where else sometimes, the employee has to ââ¬Å"cook the booksâ⬠out of his own interest as itââ¬â¢s for companyââ¬â¢s benefit. In any case it is done as to gain benefit without pointing a gun at someone and without anyone getting hurt. The white collar nature of this crime makes it very tempting for individuals and companies. Over estimating companyââ¬â¢s ROI (return over investment), Equity, Etc involves ample interest of companyââ¬â¢s owners. This provides them with the opportunity to attract more investors to invest in

Lloyd George Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Lloyd George - Essay Example An important era of study has been the era of Lloyd George's peacetime government, from 1919 to 1922 in the realm of foreign policy. Britain's external relation in this period has been quite interesting and people have conflicting views about the policies in this period. This period has also been of significance for historians because of the role of the Foreign Secretary in the making of British foreign policy. Secrecy has been a key characteristic of the foreign policy in the late nineteenth century. Small number of ministers and officials has been known to play crucial roles in the formulation of the foreign policy. Those were the times when press had its limited presence and it was not considered an important driver in the policy making. Also public opinion about different issues related to external relations of a country was not given any importance. Even among the government circles a selected elite group made key decisions. Prime Ministers directly controlled the affairs of the Foreign Office. If we look at the background history of foreign policy in Britain then we get to know that Benjamin Disraeli from 1874 to 1878 intervened constantly in the affairs of his Foreign Secretary. During the 1902 to 1905 period Arthur Balfour gave some respite in the direct intervention culture set by his predecessors but still kept a close eye on the developments in British foreign policy. ... This scenario changed with war in 1914 and foreign policy was criticized by all & sundry. Different governments also started making comments about the way foreign policy was being tackled. President Wilson of the United States became the biggest critic of covert ways of foreign policy dealings and demanded that democratic process should be involved in the affairs. War continued till 1918 and then Paris Peace Conference took place in 1919 the attention shifted to foreign policy in the peace time. Again policymakers became conscious of the relationships between Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary. After the Great War the importance foreign policy increases manifolds. Lord Curzon of Kedleston became foreign secretary from October 1919 to January 1924. British electorate also became more conscious of the foreign policy matters as many believed that poor foreign policies were behind the war. Lloyd George became the prime minister and realized the importance of foreign policy particularly in the eyes of electorates as a result of war. He realized that winning foreign policy can result in the success of a government in the eyes of public. Considering tits importance Lloyd made it a point to attend many international conferences in the period 1919 to 1922. Lloyd saw these conferences as the opportunity for both showing government presence as well as gaining economic benefits as most of these were related to trade, war debts and recompense. Foreign policy also held many dangers for the government of Lloyd George. The government could not have afforded any new wars with any other country as public opinion went heavily against war. It was during this scenario that the Chanak crisis took place in September 1922. This crisis brought the

My Childhood in Budapest Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
My Childhood in Budapest - Essay Example Because my mom and dad were interested in art, they enjoyed going there because of the Museum of Fine Arts and the Palace of Art, both of which were located nearby. It was probably going to these places so many times that sparked my own interest in artistic works. I may not have followed the career path of an artist, but I do enjoy making some sketches whenever I can. Another reason why Heroesââ¬â¢ Square is so special to me is that I first became accustomed to water at the Szà ©chenyi thermal baths. It took a little while to get used to the water, which was warm due to hot springs. The Danube Promenade was another area that I used to frequent quite a lot growing up in Budapest. My parents mostly liked to enjoy a coffee at one of the many cafes located alongside the river, but I preferred to enjoy the view of the water. One memory that I have in particular is me trying to outrun boats while I was on the sidewalk. Occasionally my parents would be so kind as to purchase a tram ticket so that we could all see the stunning views of the river winding through the city. Perhaps the most significant memory of my childhood was visiting the Buda Castle because of the history and tradition associated with this building. Although I was young and could not understand the context, I knew that his castle was an important part of Hungarian culture, and as a young Hungarian, it was my duty to learn about its history. The architecture was extremely detailed; however, the statues of mythical creatures freaked me out somewhat due to their ghastly appearance. The castle looked especially fantastic at night, and there was one occasion on my birthday where I remember witnessing the stunning views of the castle at night. Even though I have rarely been back to Budapest since I left, the city still holds a special place in my heart because I feel that I have connections there that are both physical and emotional.Ã

Nutrition classes in Texas middle schools Essay
Nutrition classes in Texas middle schools - Essay Example The youth of Texas, aged 9th through 12th grades, reported only 17% were eating the recommended number of fruits and vegetables daily, with about 45% actually meeting the physical activity requirements for people in that age group. They also reported more than 38% drank at least one non-diet soda per day. (Dehghan, Akhtar-Danesh, &Merchant, 2005) The burden of obesity has cost private Texas businesses more than $3.3 billion and the state Medicare/Medicaid system more than $ 5 billion annually. (Castellon, 2008) The U.S. Surgeon Generalââ¬â¢s office report that more than 70% of overweight children go on to become overweight adults. Efforts aimed at reducing obesity should be initiated during early childhood with positive role modeling of healthy relationships with food and exercise. The focus should be more on healthy lifestyles as opposed to dieting solutions once the weight has accumulated. (Castellon, 2008) It is projected that by the year 2025, only 14% of adult Texans will be of normal weight, resulting in over $15 billion being spent annually for obesity related health issues. Texas has already begun to invest in nutrition and wellness education by spending $20 million in support for school physical education, fitness, and nutrition programs for middle-schoolers, in 6th ââ¬â 8th grades. ... (Castellon, 2008) According to an independent study published by the American Journal of Public Health in 2008, the declining results may be attributable to the implementation of the Texas Public School Nutritional Policy, which took effect in 2003. The study collected three years worth of lunch menus and student choices, combined with health evaluations of Texas school children in more than six hundred participating schools across Texas. The Nutritional Policy aimed at instituting change by reducing availability of non-nutrient items, providing milk, fruits and vegetables, as well as healthy entree items on the menus. The entrees featured foods higher in protein, fiber, vitamins A and C, and Calcium. This study supports that school lunch choices had the potential to impact the problem of obesity showing short term reductions in obesity for participants, with further research being required. (Cullen, 2008) The International Journal of Obesity reported an increase in early onset child hood obesity with more prevalence in Mexican Americans and African Americans than in non-Hispanic White participants. The fat patterning in these groups was also more noticeably truncal, located around the middle region of the body; this pattern is more closely associated with Type II Diabetes, hyperinsulinemia, and cardiovascular risk factors. (Park, Menard, Schoolfield, 2001) (Guzman, 2011) In taking a closer look at the ethnic patterns of obesity, several factors appear to be involved. First of all, non-Hispanic Blacks and Hispanics were found to be less likely to engage in physical activities. This was attributed to less availability of safe areas to perform physical activities. Secondly, this group was also found to be more satisfied with

Papa Johns Essay Example for Free
Papa Johns Essay It shouldnt have to be shared, but Papa Johns exists pretty strongly within the fast food environment. Power of buyers is high, substitutes are readily available, etc. Now, to explain their current strategy. Papa Johns, through their efforts, have allowed them to rise to having 6% of the market they exist in, but generally still pale in comparison to Pizza Hut and Dominos. However, their strategy that theyve picked for themselves seems to be working for their environment. Their strategy being that they promote themselves as a premium pizza, with superior quality and an attention to customers details. Theyve also differentiated themselves by having partnerships with larger corporations such as Coca-Cola and their suppliers. This is a key point. By having contracts with their suppliers, such as the quarterly contract with their cheese suppliers, keeping prices stable at all times is a very easy task, while the other pizza places will often have to vary their prices throughout the year. However, one mistake that has been coming up that they dont match the environment, has shown that they have tried placing too many stores too quickly. Theyve had to shut down several underperforming stores within the past year, which shows that trying to forcefully expand their market share into areas that already have strong brand loyalty with other competitors is not the answer. Their recent partnership to be the pizza sponsor of the Superbowl over the past three years is a correct way. This allows people to get a cheap premium pizza and try and understand its superiority. There are a few key issues that Papa Johns should expand on, especially in the next five years. Papa Johns, in terms of its menu, is drastically behind its competitors. Dominos and Pizza Hut both offer more alternative options in terms of just having pizza. If Papa Johns differentiated its product and included the same items that the competitors provide, such as sandwiches and salad options, their focus could be spread to more people that are not currently within their market share. This can also be solved through acquisition. Papa Johns was created by a company combining with a pizza company, so another acquisition of another type of food industry could drastically change Papa Johns for the better. Another key issue that none of the big three pizza companies are doing is touching the international market. All of them have stores, but they often are just moving their culture to other countries. Papa Johns is known for their customer details. Why not incorporate other countries tastes and cultures within their food details? At any rate, from the previous year, growth and sales are a bit down. In a market of strong brand loyalty, these minor differentiations are going to be what makes or breaks Papa Johns.

Business And Marketing Plan For A Italian Restaurant Marketing Essay
Business And Marketing Plan For A Italian Restaurant Marketing Essay The location is very good as the CITYPRIDE multiplex is situated in KOTHRUD which is the fastest developed suburb in Pune.It is located close to the market area with Proximity to a number of colleges, schools and IT business establishments.CITYPRIDE is the only multiplex in the area.It also has a mall which leads to high footfalls on A daily basis. With this concentration of customers.there are no Italian restaurants that offer Pizzas and Pastas in Kothrud and a tremendous need for an upscale family restaurant that offers these items for both the adults and children. The turnkey operation seats 150 customers and is the perfect size for an Italian Restaurant. With the current lease and the fitout time of three months it will be very easy to procure all the required equipments and commence operations at the earliest. The growth in the number of high income families in the KOTHRUD area is also projected.ITALIA would be a perfect neighborhood restaurant in the perfect Neighborhood. Introduction- Company Description-PEEGEE Co,a Pune based company, will operate ITALIA, a single unit, medium-size restaurant serving healthy, contemporary style food. The restaurant will be located at shop No;4,CITYPRIDE MULTIPLEX,KOTHRUD,PUNE-411038 Mission Statement-The companys goal is that of a multi-faceted success. Their first responsibility should be to the financial well-being of the restaurant. They must meet this goal while trying to consider; 1) the effect of their products on the health and well being of their customers (and their staff), 2) the impact that their business practices and choices will have on the environment, and 3) the high quality of attitude, fairness, understanding, and generosity between management, staff, customers, and vendors. Awareness of all these factors and the responsible actions that result will give our efforts a sense of purpose and meaning beyond their basic financial goals. Development Status The company was incorporated in December 2010. The founders are Pravin Malhotra and Vikas Malhotra. Both are the managing partners of the co. They have put Rs 10,00,000/- each towards the initial investment for research and start-up costs. The remaining will be funded by the banks. A suitable site for the first restaurant was found last month and lease negotiations are in the final stages. The location will be in CITYPRIDE MULTIPLEX,in Kothrud which is biggest and the fastest developing suburb in Pune. When the lease is signed there will be three months of free rent for construction and in that time the balance of the start-up funds must be raised. With that phase completed, ITALIA Restaurant can then open and the operations phase of the project can begin. Future Plans If the business is meeting its projections by month nine, they will start scouting for a second location and develop plans for the next unit. Their five year goal is to have 3 restaurants in the PUNE area with a combined annual profit of between RS 50 LAKHS To Rs 100 Lakhs. The SWOT Analysis Strength-The strength of the company lies in the fact that Mr Pravin Malhotra the managing director of the company is a graduate from the Institute of Hotel Managent, Aurangabad. He is very honest and hardworking and has worked with the Le Meridien group of hotels as a F B manager for the last three years. His experience in the hotel industry would be very helpful in the day to day running of the restaurant. In addition the fact that both the directors are putting in Rs 10 lakhs each from their own savings is also very helpful. The need for additional capital will not be very much and it Could be procured from the banks easily. WeaknessThe fact that the promoters have no previous business experience could be a major drawback for the them. This weakness can be overcome by meticulate planning and Execution. OpportunityThis business plan reflects the opportunity on the part of the promoters to lease the premises offered by the owners of the CITYPRIDE multiplex. They had put up an advertisement in the local newspaper seeking persons interested in running a restaurant at their famous multiplex. The promoters took this opportunity and immediately approached the owners. They were the first ones to do so .They liked the premises instantly since it was located right at the entrance of the multiplex .The promoters immediately took a descision and signed the lease by giving a suitable deposit to the owners of the multiplex.. The promoters saw huge opportunity in opening up an Italian restaurant in the place. This was due to the fact that there was not a single Italian restaurant in the entire suburb of Kothrud which is the largest and the fastest growing suburb of the Pune city.Pune has itself grown into a very large metropolitan city in the past five years with the advent and growth of the IT sect or,In addition Pune has always been an educational hub since the last twenty years boasting of a large number of schools ,colleges and post-graduate management and other institutes. No wonder it is called the OXFORD of the east. Threats-There are a couple of renowned food chains within close range of the CITYPRIDE multiplex. These include the McDonalds restaurant which is located around a Kilo Meter from the place and the SUBWAY which is a mere half KM away from us.These could Provide us with stiff competition and could be a threat to the growth of the restaurant. In additions threat may also be posed by someone who might opt to open another Italian Restaurant in the vicinity. THE PEST ANALYSIS The Political AnalysisThe political environment in the country is very much stable and is conducive to the growth of the industry in general and the hotel industry in particular. The Indian government is taking huge steps to promote local as well as international tourism in the country. The Economical AnalysisThe total investment required for this project is 57,80,000/-. For deposit to the owner of the premises, advance rent of one month, as well as kitchen equipment, for interiors and also starting salary to the staff. The company promoters have pooled in Rs 20,00,000/- from their personal Savings ,The remaining amount of Rs 37,80,000/- will be raised by securing a loan from any of the nationalised banks. The promoters shall mortgage one of their personal property for the same. Social AnalysisAlthough the restaurant industry is very competitive, the lifestyle changes created by modern living continue to fuel its steady growth. More and more people have less time, resources, and ability to cook for themselves. Trends are very important and ITALIA is well positioned for the current interest in lighter, healthier foods at moderate to low prices. The food service business is the third largest industry in the country. The average PUNEITE spends 15% of his/her income on meals away from home. This number has been increasing for the past seven years. In the past five years the restaurant industry has out-performed. The reasons given are 1) lifestyle changes, 2) economic climate, and 3) increase of product variety. There are new restaurants opening every month and more needed to keep pace with increasing demand. The predicated growth trend is very positive both in short and long-term projections. As modern living creates more demands, people will be compelled to eat more meals away from home. Estimates are as high as 30% over the next five years. It is understood that: Consumers will spend a greater proportion of their food Rupee away from home. Independent operators and entrepreneurs will be the main source of new restaurant concepts. Nutritional concerns will be critical at all types of foodservice operations, and food flavors will be important. Environmental concerns will receive increased attention. Technological analysis ITALIA will be 150 seat restaurant. It will cater to the students as well as the business establishments and families of the area.It will require to adopt latest technological equipments to help serve the customers better. The seating arrangement and the chairs and tables must be of high quality and great care must be taken in designing and furnishing the interiors. PRODUCT AND SERVICE PLAN IMPLIMENTATIONS-ITALIA Restaurant will be offering a menu of food and beverages with a distinctive image. There will be three ways to purchase these products; table service at the restaurant, take-out from the restaurant, and delivery to home or office. The Menu The ITALIA menu (see appendices) is moderate sized, and moderate-low priced offering a collection of Italian items with a common theme healthy (low-fat, low cholesterol, natural ingredients), flavorful, and familiar. Their goal is to create the image of light satisfying and still nutritious food. Production Food production and assembly will take place in the kitchen of the restaurant. Fresh vegetables, meat and dairy products will be used to crate most of the dishes from scratch. The chef will exercise strict standards of sanitation, quality production, and presentation or packaging over the kitchen and service staff. Service There will be three ways a customer can purchase food. They may sit down at one of the 150 seats in the dining room and get full service from a steward. A separate take-out counter will service those who wish to pick up their food. Future Opportunities There is a market segment that prefers to eat this type of cooking at home although they do not have the time to cook. There are already caterers and even mail order companies that provide individuals and families with up to a months supply of pre-prepared meals. This opportunity will be researched and developed on a trial basis. If successful, it could become a major new source of income without creating the need for additional staff or production space. The Target Market The market for ITALIA products covers a large area of diverse and densely populated groups. Although it will be located in a downtown urban setting, it is an area where people travel to eat out and one that is also frequented by CINEGOERS. It is also an area known for and catering to the demographic group they are targeting. Market Location Customers -The CITYPRIDE MULTIPLEX is the best multiplex in the area.It is one of the most desirable retail locations hosting an independent Mall.In addition it is close to Colleges and universities. The customer base will come from 3 major segments; Local population the city of PUNE with a year-round population of 45 lakhs is centrally located in the Maharashtra state and is within 15 minutes drive of 8 major suburbs. Colleges and Universities PUNE alone has 6 different schools within walking distance of Citypride. In addition 5 more colleges near the square have large student bodies. Tourism à ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬ There are number of tourists coming to Pune all the year long. Local businesses à ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬ Kothrud is a very big suburb of Pune boasting of a huge number of business establishments. The food concept and product image of ITALIA will attract 3 different customer profiles; The student more and more young people have developed healthy eating habits. Some also go through a health food phase while in college. The health conscious person of any age or sex this includes anyone on a restricted or prescribed diet or those who have committed to a healthy diet. Curious and open-minded if you try it, you will like it. Through marketing, publicity, and word-of-mouth, people will seek out a new experience and learn that nutritious food can be tasty, fun, convenient, and inexpensive. Market Trends The Future The population and demographics of PUNE have grown tremendously in the last 15 years.Pune which is called the Oxford of the east is famous for its educational institutes. In addition the economy of Pune has grown leaps and bounds with the Booming of the IT sector. With more and more families becoming nuclear and both the spouses working the people no longer have time to cook at home.Hence the lifestyles of people have changed. The idea of a health consciousness through nutritional awareness and dietary change has been slowly building for the last 5 years. The extensive government studies and new Food Guide Pyramid have given everyone a new definition of a balanced, healthy diet. This is not a fad but a true dietary trend backed by the scientific and medical community, the media, the government, and endorsed by the big food manufacturers. As people want to stay home more and cook less our strategy of delivering prepared meals on a weekly or monthly arrangement may be a widespread accept ed new way of eating The CompetitionThere are over two dozen restaurants in the KOTHRUD area that sell food at similar prices. Although there is no exclusive Italian restaurant this presents an obvious challenge in terms of market share, it also indicates the presence of a large, strong potential. ITALIA will make a successful entry based on an innovative concept or novelty. ITALIA will offer an innovative product in a familiar style at a competitive price. The co must make aggressive plans of take-out and delivery that will also give them an advantage to create a good market share before the competition can adjust or similar concepts appear. Competitors Profile Competing with ITALIA for the target market are these categories of food providers: Independent table service restaurants. Chain restaurants like McDonalds and SUBWAY, Commercial foodservice companies serving students directly. Independent operators include FIVE SEASONS RESTAURANT, MCDONALDS, and The SUBWAY. There are couple of companies which sell food directly to the students as well. Competitive Strategy-There are three major ways in which they must create an advantage over their competitors; product identity, quality, and novelty, high employee motivation and good sales attitude, innovative and aggressive service options. ITALIA will be the only restaurant among all the competition which focuses the entire menu on Italian food. Pizzas and Pastas are a major hit amongst the students as well as the IT public in Pune. Each of the competitors offers only one or two Italian dishes on their menu.ITALIA will be the exclusive Italian restaurant in the entire suburb of Kothrud. Once they have tried the restaurant, their experience will be reinforced by friendly, efficient, knowledgeable service. Return and repeat business will be facilitated by accessible take-out and delivery options. Marketing Plan Sales Strategy Market Penetration Entry into the market should not be a problem. The store has high visibility with heavy foot traffic all day long. The local residents and students always support new restaurants and the tourists do not have fixed preferences. In addition, Rs 1 lakh has been budgeted for a pre-opening advertising and public relations campaign. Marketing Strategy Focusing on the unique aspect of the product theme (healthy, tasty foods) a mix of marketing vehicles must be created to convey their presence, their image, and their message. Print media local newspapers, magazines and student publications, Broadcast media local programming and special interest shows, Hotel guides, concierge relations, Chamber of Commerce brochures, Direct mail subscriber lists, offices for delivery Misc. yellow pages, charity events. A public relations firm has been retained to create special events and solicit print and broadcast coverage, especially at the start-up. The marketing effort will be split into 3 phases; Opening An advanced notice (press packet) sent out by the PR firm to all media and printed announcement ads in key places. Future plans and Strategic Opportunities Catering to offices (even outside of our local area) may become a large part of gross sales. At that point a sales agent would be hired to directly market our products for daily delivery or catered functions. Operations Facilities Offices The restaurant at CITYPRIDE MULTIPLEX is a 2400 Square foot space. It was formerly a restaurant and needs on minor structural modifications. The licenses and codes issues are all in order. New equipment and dining room furnishings will be purchased and installed by the general contractor. Offices of the corporation are presently at MR PRAVIN MALHOTRAS home but will be moved to the restaurant after opening. Hours of Operation The restaurant will be open for lunch and dinner 7 days a week. Service will begin at 11:00 AM and end at 11:00 PM. Employee Training Education Employees will be trained not only in their specific operational duties but in the philosophy and applications of our concept. They will receive extensive information from the chef and be kept informed of the latest information on healthy eating. Systems Controls A big emphasis should be placed on extensive research into the quality and integrity of their products. They will constantly be tested for their own high standards of freshness and purity. Food costs and inventory control will be handled by their computer system and checked daily by management. Food Production Most food will be prepared on the premises. The kitchen will be designed for high standards of sanitary efficiency and cleaned daily. Food will be made mostly to order and stored in large coolers in the basement. Delivery Catering Food for delivery may be similar to take-out (prepared to order) or it may be prepared earlier and stocked. Catering will be treated as deliveries. Management Organization-Key Employees Principals-PRAVIN MALHOTRA AND VIKAS MALHOTRAS are the managing partners of the company. They will initially look after the setting up of the restaurant. The restaurant will have a cashier,a FB manager and a team of stewards and waiters to look after the customers. Compensation Incentives ITALIA will offer competitive wages and salaries to all employees with benefit packages available to key personnel only. Management to be Added They must search for a general manager and executive chef. These key employees must be well chosen and given incentives for performance and growth. Management Structure Style Mr Pravin Malhotra will be the Chief Operating Officer. The general manager and chef will report to him. The assistant manager and sous-chef will report to their respective managers, and all other employees will be subordinate to them. Long-Term Development Exit Plan-Goals-ITALIA is an innovative concept that targets a new, growing market. We assume that the market will respond, and grow quickly in the next 5 years. Our goals are to create a reputation of quality, consistency and security (safety of food) that will make us the leader of a new style of dining. Strategies-The marketing efforts must be concentrated on take-out and delivery, the areas of most promising growth. As the market changes, new products may be added to maintain sales.-Milestones-After the restaurant opens, they must keep a close eye on sales and profit. If they are on target at the end of year 1, they will look to expand to a second unit. Risk Evaluation-With any new venture, there is risk involved. The success of the project hinges on the strength and acceptance of a fairly new market. After year 1, we expect some copycat competition in the form of other independent units. Chain competition will be much later. Exit Plan-Ideally, ITALIA will expand to five units in the next 10 years. At that time, we will entertain the possibility of a buy-out by a larger restaurant concern or actively seek to sell to a new owner. CONCLUSION- From the above mentioned analysis and the plans formulated therein we can come to the Conclusion that: Pune is the most favoured destination for IT companies, students and the business community. The economy of Pune has grown with leaps and bounds in the last decade. The popularity of The Italian foods like pasta and pizza have grown with the students and the families. Kothrud is the fastest developing suburb in the Pune city.It does not have an Italian restaurant.Hence there is a tremendous scope for the setting up of an exclusive Italian restaurant which will cater to the student and the IT community. The premises chosen by the company is very good and it attracts a large number of footfalls daily. The footfalls increase dramatically during the weekends. The owner Mr Pravin Malhotra being a hotel management graduate and having a work experience of a fb manager at a reputed hotel is well versed with the job of running a restaurant.Altough he has no business experience ,his work experience may see him through. The owners of the company have a strong financial base and have invested about 20 lakh rupees for setting up the restaurant. In addition they have a personal property that can be mortgaged to the bank for a loan. Although there is a presence of other food chains like the McDonalds and Subway the project may still be a huge success because of the fact that there is not a single restaurant serving a complete Italian menu. With a proper marketing plan and strategy adopted by the company the project is bound to succeed. The owners have also hired quality chefs and managers who in turn will hire quality service staff which will provide healthy and nutritious food to the people.

Flannery O Connor :: essays papers
Flannery O Connor Biases and Stereotypes Add Reality and Relation to Literature An authorââ¬â¢s personal bias is often expressed through their literature that is composed. In her short story ââ¬Å"Everything That Rises Must Converge,â⬠Flannery Oââ¬â¢Connor is guilty of stereotyping on the basis of race. Through out this story her characters refer and respond to ââ¬Å"Negroesâ⬠as an inferior race. This racial division surrounds the storyââ¬â¢s conflicts and eventually results in the tragic climax. In the plot, a significant character only known as ââ¬Å"Julianââ¬â¢s motherâ⬠is obviously prejudice and the author expresses her feelings clearly using stereotypes and biases, that animate the story. Her biasness is clearly demonstrated early in the story but is concrete during the seen on the bus, when Julian is taking his mother to the ââ¬ËYââ¬â¢. Once she is seated comfortably on the bus she notices that there are only whites on board and states casually aloud, ââ¬Å"I see we have the bus to ourselves.â⬠This statement shows a complete bias and desire for separation between races by the author. The conversation on the bus continues between the white passengers and eventually turns away from race. However, while the conversation is taking place Julian purposely detaches himself from his surroundings. The plot revolves around a conflict of social acceptance between Julian and his mother. She seems to be stock in the past thinking she is higher on the soc ial ladder than the next person, when in reality the live on a street that was once well established, but is now in ruin while having little money. Julian is quoted early in the story stating that ââ¬Å"Someday Iââ¬â¢ll start making money,â⬠- he knew he never would.â⬠His motherââ¬â¢s attitude is despised by Julian along with her racial remarks. It is her racism that Julian uses to try to ââ¬Å"Teach her a lesson.â⬠When Julian chose to sit next to a colored man on the bus the climax of the story began to build. This action was taken by Julian as a way to annoy his mother. He even went as far as to ask the colored man for a light which was a gesture totally out of contempt because he had nothing to light. The way Flannery Oââ¬â¢Connor describes the colored woman who enters the bus is a typical stereotype of a black mother. Oââ¬â¢Connorââ¬â¢s first descriptive words of this woman are ââ¬Å" large, gaily dressed sullen looking colored women - she was a giant women,â⬠The author was able with those adjectives strip this woman of her femininity and create an eyesore.
The play A Memory of Lizzie is a fictional look at the childhood years
The play ââ¬Å"A Memory of Lizzieâ⬠is a fictional look at the childhood years of the infamous murderess Lizzie Bordon The Memory of Lizzie Bordon The play ââ¬Å"A Memory of Lizzieâ⬠is a fictional look at the childhood years of the infamous murderess Lizzie Bordon. Set in America the late eighteen hundreds, the play takes place in an average middle class neighbourhood in Massachusetts at that time. The play takes place in an average suburban school, and the characters are (or at least the children of) moderately wealthy people. The Characters in the play are the childhood acquaintances of Lizzie Bordon, each aged around twelve years old, though due the era they would probably be less mature than modern day twelve year olds. Each character has a different attitude towards Lizzie which becomes apparent as the play continues. The children Ann Dorothy Barbara Irma Jo and Kathy all bully Lizzie, while Christy and Georgina pity her. The character Rachel Brayton is a very quiet character, possibly younger than the other children present in the scene and therefore more fearful towards Lizzie. The set in the scene that we performed consisted of some steps to represent the schools steps and a pair of curtains to represent doors. The scene starts with the children frozen, some playing with a ball, others with cards and three with a skipping rope. The only other prop that we needed was the doll that Rachel Brayton played with. Costumes would include schools uniforms, gr...

My Philosophy of Education :: Teaching Education Essays
My Philosophy of Education As a future educator with a concentration in reading and social studies, I believe that students learn better in an environment where they are actively learning and teaching one another. I also believe children learn best through actively learning and applying the concepts they should be learning. I will hold myself to the following ethical foundations. I believe that every child, no matter who he/she is or what his/her circumstances are, deserves to receive a good education. I believe that equality for all children is absolutely necessary in the classroom., along with fairness, truth and honestly which play important roles in education. Therefore, I see myself as an existentialist in that children need freedom in education to find out who they are and to discover things for themselves. I also see myself as a progressivist. I believe that the classroom should a place where children feel comfortable and secure. I believe each child is different, and I must adapt my teaching to the way the child best learns. I believe axiology is important in education. The goal of education should not be that the child passes a test, but whether or not he or she actually learns what is needed to be known, and can use that knowledge in their life. My purpose is to guide and help them learn the things they will need for their lives and to do that with a positive attitude. My classroom will be a place where children can feel secure and equal. There will always be diversity in the classroom since no one is ever the same, but everyone deserves to have the best education possible and should not be looked down upon because of their ethnic background or race. I want the classroom to have a positive family-type atmosphere where everyone is supported and no one is put down. It will be a room that encourages the imaginations of the children and their curiosities.

Juvenile Delinquency Factors Pertaining to Criminal Behavior Essay
This was pounded home in this statement made by Congressman Bobby Scott who said, ââ¬Å"Giving a 10-year mandatory minimum for a second offense fist fight is not going to reduce the chance that someone will be stabbed 16 times when you are not funding any of the programs that are desperately needed to actually reduce juvenile crimeâ⬠. Juveniles are the future so it is important that we look at cause of criminal behavior within this age group. In order to provide them with outlets that influence their outlook on life and futures and this can only be done if we know what it is that has influenced their life thus far and how we can implement things into their environment that will change their outlook. The first place to look is the family because these are usually the people that the closest and usually the most influential on young people. According to David P. Farrington a Professor of Criminology research has shown that 53 percent of 1,000 adults when asked what they perceived to be the main cause of violence, they agreed it was lack of discipline. And according to Professor Farrington academic research performed in 1997 confirmed the earlier finding. Discipline in the school system was also a factor according to about 15 % of those same adults. The other factors for juvenile delinquency in this research were poverty, violence on television, broken homes as well as drugs and alcohol. This research had to then divide the family influences into six different categories. The first says that delinquent and antisocial children are usually influenced by parents and siblings that are antisocial and or criminal. The greatest influence among 400 males that research was performed on found that males between eight years old and 48 was the convicted father and 63% of those with convicted fathers ended up being convicted as well. In a akin research on families with multiple children it was seen that the older children were convicted more often than younger siblings and only 6% percent of these families ended up with all the children being convicted. What we see here is that home is often times the start of delinquency because problems at home can affect other areas in a childââ¬â¢s life. At times though other areas of the childââ¬â¢s life can affect his or her behavior and may not have anything to do with home life although family may see some differences in the child but not know what has caused the behavior or ignore it thinking this maybe something that the child would out grow. That behavior though at times can a childââ¬â¢s way of crying out for help or attention. Some other things that may trigger delinquency are failure or poor academic levels in school. This can cause frustration and lack of attendance, outburst that can lead to a child being expelled from school. Poor social skills leaving a child feeling unwanted or unable to blend in with his or her peers may cause the child to withdraw and not be able to ask for help or act just the opposite and act out drawing attention to their self or have violent outburst which increases the likely hood that the child will drop out of school or be expelled. Substance abuse is high risk factor for these children in a few different ways. The main thing is that drugs and alcohol tend to cause a temporary relief of the mental or even physical anguish that the child sees their self going through. This usually puts the child in contact with someone that encourages the behavior for the sake of profit but uses guile to fabricate a relationship causing the child to think that he or she is important. This person then enables the addiction to the substances and often times contribute to the illegal behaviors by encouraging the child to sell drugs for him or her. This is done by different means of trickery such as telling them they need a favor done or the main one is tempting the child with the prospect of earning money to help them or their family. This is a great attraction to the child that comes from a broken home and living in poverty for they see it as way of helping to support the family. This type of behavior is also seen in areas that are prone to gangs. They entice the younger child in because they are easier to manipulate. They make the child feel that they are a part of a bigger family and tell them they understand better than their own parents at times. The gang encourages criminal activity to help finance the gang and use violence to protect the gang. This means that the younger the child the easier it is to mold them into their way of thinking. These many times end up with the child being put in danger that may lead to injury and regrettably at times even death. Today we have some programs that help with child delinquency but at times or in some areas there are not enough resources or programs out there to provide better alternatives. This may be the lack of finances and other reasons may include fear caused by gang activity, threats and or violence.
